The Power of the Scent of Kindness

Smell is a wonderful gift. According to the site Everyday Health, people can detect at least one trillion distinct scents, women have a better sense of smell than men, and you can even smell fear and disgust from others. Who knew the sense of smell held this much power! This is one of the reasons that my husband and I traditionally give one another fragrance each year as a Christmas gift!

Speaking of smell, this is the week of Christmas and I desire to inspire  you to cultivate a presence that exudes a scent of kindness wherever you go, bringing a sweet fragrance to those around near because of The Remarkable Woman you are. 2 Corinthians 2:15-16 speaks of the fragrance believers in Christ are blessed with:

For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life.

In my FaceBook LIVE broadcast in our FaceBook community, I talked about the power of being a sweet, pleasant aroma of Christ to a dying and hopeless world where people are looking to experience something that causes their souls to become fully alive! Also, the context of this verse is that it requires making a sacrifice and feeling a sense of obligation to God. Simply put, we owe it to God to offer remarkable acts of kindness because it is well pleasing to Him. But, you and I must be intentional. It requires a willingness to make space in your crowded life.

Things that smell good and pleasing creates an experience that is attractive, inviting and magnetic! Kindness is one such good smelling thing. Kindness, an attribute, makes the heart smile and brings joy to the soul. It is contagious and limitless in its power. It’s defined as the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate. Kind people are the ones you want to be around. Their type of kindness just smells good and feels good for your soul.

Christ is the epitome of kindness. When we consider the physical environment Christ came into the world thousands of years ago, there was not this sweet aroma that would even cause you to think anything great would happen in his life. His birth took place in a smelly barn, housed by animals who ate hay, chomped on grain, and pooped a lot. And, His mother, out of the kindness in her heart, placed him in a manger, a feeding trough for the horses and cattle

From the natural view, nothing smelled good at that moment and such could be the case with your life. You, perhaps, even wonder if anything good can result from the situation. Stop and take the time and see it with spiritual eyes. God, like through the birth of Jesus was displaying an incredible and explosive amount of kindness upon the world! He lavished His love upon mankind! It still is incomprehensible!

Jesus, literally the scent of eternal kindness from God to mankind, brought the beauty of kindness into being to those who would believe in him. So, take heart, when it comes to your life, He can cause the same beautiful and pleasing aroma to come from the smelly parts of your life too! Just trust Him and stay in the journey of showing remarkable kindness.

Don’t forget, although kindness is a command, it is a choice that requires deliberate intention.
